Trusted, Qualified, Mobile Tuition

Teaching is moving pupils forwards in their understanding; sometimes the steps are big, sometimes the steps are small.

The tricky part, and the part of the puzzle that I enjoy, is working out how big the steps should be, the order in which they’re taken and what familiar ground will help them to make this particular step.

“It’s nice to have ideas explained in a different way.”

“I get to ask questions and then we discuss it with drawings and then I know why it works that way.”

“Seeing my subjects applied to real-world problems puts them in context for me and I can visualise it so much better.”

Testimonials

Here are some of my favourite messages from over a decade of personal tutoring, now you’ll understand why I love my job.

  • Dear Rob,

Now your tutorship with our son Oliver is drawing to a close and GCSEs loom! — Cheryl and I would like to thank you for all you have done to lift Oliver’s confidence levels.

You have assisted to a point whereas he no longer dreads his forthcoming examinations but goes into them knowing he has a fighting chance, hitherto something he felt was unattainable.

Your all-round ability to cover all subjects from English. through Maths and Science has proven invaluable and we are grateful for all you have done for both Oliver and our family — it is appreciated.

Thanks for everything Rob and good luck for the future.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ian and Cheryl
  • Dear Rob

I'd just like to thank you for working with Meghan over the last two years on her GCSE Biology and Chemistry. We have seen her progress and become more confident with heese subjects. We appreciate your support in assisting Meghan to achieve good grades in these subjects this summer. We hope you will be able to work with Meghan's sister over the next few years to assist her in achieving her best potential also.

    Yours sincerely,

    Andy
  • Rob has been maths tutor to our son Jack, 15 yrs, since September. He was asked to help when we became concerned at Jack's lack of confidence in the subject and the realisation that his long held hope of becoming an officer in the armed forces could not be realised if he did not achieve at least a grade 'C' at GCSE.

Rob adopts a friendly but very professional approach when tutoring and this brought an early positive response from Jack. His confidence has continued to increase as his test results have improved (top of the class in the latest), and he now takes pride in assisting others in maths lessons. He is predicted by the school to achieve the grade he needs (or even better) in his forthcoming GCSE exam and he no longer regards maths as his 'weakest' subject.

Rob's patient and focused approach, coupled with his natural ability to instil self-belief, have now hopefully given Jack every chance of achieving his ambition. We have been very impressed with the results Rob has achieved with Jack and have no hesitation in recommending him as a tutor for a young person in a similar situation.

  • When I was studying Physics at Sixth Form, I found that my grades were severely lagging, and I was in serious danger of not achieving the grades required to study Physics at university. It was for this reason that I started having lessons with Rob. He helped me to find the areas that I was having particular difficulty with, and for one or two hours each week up until my final exams we worked through the specification.

The main benefit of being taught by Rob is that he doesn't focus on learning equations and definitions by rote; he actually explains where it all comes from in an easy, understandable and logical way. What this achieves is a far greater understanding of the underlying concepts in Physics, and therefore a greater ability to tackle physics problems both in class and in an examination. Furthermore, by working one on one with Rob, it allowed me to take everything at my own pace, to focus more on areas that I struggled with, and after each stage of learning, he would check my progress and understanding, making me far more confident with the subject matter.

The time I had learning Physics with Rob was truly invaluable. Not only did I achieve the grades needed to study Physics at university, but it has given me the firm foundation of understanding that is needed to study physics at a higher level. Rob is a fantastic person, and a highly competent teacher, who I would wholeheartedly recommend.

How do you gauge the quality of tuition?

Many people are not confident in challenging a tutor.

If someone spends an extra 80 minutes a week doing something and then has additional homework, they will get better; how could they not? However, are they getting better at a rate proportional to the extra effort they’ve just put in? That’s almost half a week of maths lessons they’ve just done.

I offer 1 hour sessions.

-Face-to-face teaching and learning with tons of anecdotes and analogies to contextualise knowledge.

I teach how to problem solve, I teach how to get unstuck– the ultimate goal is knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do.

I give tips and show where other students often make mistakes.

I teach a personable, confident attitude.

-I really care.

Which method do you think is most successful?

Focussed on Success

I don’t believe in ‘teaching to the test’ but I do make sure I focus on success.

Teaching to the test is a phrase that means teaching only what is about to be tested instead of a fuller understanding of the subject. This is a bit like when some people learnt the column method, they didn’t know why it worked only that you had to carry one here for addition and borrow one there for subtraction.

I do make sure that we are optimising our opportunities though by using the specification of the exam board for the qualification (where appropriate) and also making sure that we practise answering questions in the way that they expect ed to be presented.

I’ll come to you.

After a busy day, you don’t want to be driving around, trying to be here and there at the same time. At some point it would be nice to settle down for the evening, right?

I try to organise consecutive sessions in similar areas to minimise travel, it’s a bit better for the environment too.

Tutoring is a team exercise.

I can come to you. You can meet me, we’ll talk about what we could do. You can judge me and, when I’ve gone, talk about how you think it went and whether you’d like to work together longer term.
